AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
Zak Keegan (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) drove in a pair of runs and
Adrian Mercier (
Fr.-Powers, Mich.) and
Rily Roberts (
Fr.-Chattanooga, Tenn.) combined to pitch a five-hitter as the Lakeland University baseball team defeated Greenville (Ill.) University 5-2 Monday night.
The Muskies finished with a split on the third day of their spring break trip to the RussMatt Invitational, earning the win after a 17-4 loss to SUNY Oneonta earlier in the evening. Lakeland is now 3-2 through five games in Florida and 3-4 overall this season.
The Muskies scored in the top of the first and never trailed against Greenville (5-6 overall) in a game that was still close throughout. Lakeland held slim leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before tacking on two insurance runs in the final inning.
Keegan twice helped the Muskies extend their lead, with an RBI single in the fifth to score
Logan South (
Fr.-Oswego, Ill.) and give Lakeland a 3-1 lead, and again in the ninth with a single to right to score
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah) and cap the scoring.
Chris Day (
Jr.-Victorville, Calif.) also added a two-out, RBI triple in the second inning to score
Sean Gregorius (
Fr.-Germantown, Wis.) and give the Muskies a 2-0 lead. Lakeland also twice scored runs on errors as the Panthers committed four errors in the game.
The pitching of Mercier and Roberts also helped the Muskies stay in control. In his first collegiate start, Mercier threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out seven. Roberts came on in the seventh and finished with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to earn his first save.
Lakeland bounced back after a rough outing in the first game that wasn't helped by morning and afternoon rains that resulted in a lengthy rain delay and a game that started at 9:15 a.m. local time not finishing until early in the evening.
SUNY Oneonta (2-3 overall) scored in six of the seven innings contested before the game ended after seven due to the 10-run rule. That included four runs in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead and then six in the top of the seventh.
Twelve different Red Dragons players recorded at least one hit as part of a 17-hit attack, and 10 different players drove in at least one run. Josh Gilkey led Oneonta going 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Keegan and Day both notched two hits each for Lakeland and Day,
Tucker Gegenfurtner (
So.-Onalaska, Wis.) and
Landen Sobieski (
Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) all drove in runs.
Lakeland took Tuesday off and is back in action in Auburndale Wednesday when it faces Utica (N.Y.) University and Penn State University-Abington, with the two games starting with the opener against Utica at 11:15 a.m. Central, 12:15 p.m. in Florida.
