Sperber, Steinbock both receive NACC women’s soccer honors

Lakeland University's Malaya Sperber (Sr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and Ingrid Steinbock (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) both were named honorable mention selections when the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference released its postseason awards for the women's soccer season on Thursday.

Sperber was named honorable mention as a forward while Steinbock was recognized for her work as a goalkeeper. Both received honorable mention honors for the second time in their careers, including Sperber for the second straight year, and it's the first time Lakeland has had two on the all-NACC team since 2010, when both Kristina Borts and Ashley Sarbacker were named second team selections.

Sperber concluded a terrific three-year career at Lakeland with a big season. She scored 12 goals and added eight assists for 32 points total, numbers that all rank among the leaders in the NACC as she is currently second in the conference in total points scored, tied for third in goals and third in assists.

Sperber scored goals in seven different matches, including seven goals against NACC opponents. Her 12 goals scored are the most by a Muskie since Mimi Pulido scored 13 goals in 2015, and she finishes with 24 career goals, 10 assists and 58 points. Sperber's goals and points totals both are 11th-best in program history in their respective categories.

Steinbock returned to full-time duty in goal this year after sharing time last year, and she was one of the best goalkeepers in the NACC while facing nearly twice as many shots as any other keeper in the conference.

Steinbock started all 18 matches and played every minute in goal, making 194 saves and finishing with a .776 save percentage including four shutouts. She leads the NACC by a wide margin in saves and saves per game (11.1) and also is third in the conference in save percentage and tied for fifth in shutouts. Her 194 saves also rank as the third-most of any player in NCAA Division III.

Steinbock made at least 10 saves in 11 matches, including a career-high 24 saves at Concordia Wisconsin Oct. 24. Her saves total is the second-most in a season in Lakeland women's soccer history, behind only Brenda Apel's 213 saves in 1997.

Lakeland finished 5-13 overall this year, a three-win improvement over last year, and has put players on the all-conference teams in three consecutive years for the first time since 1998-2010, when the Muskies had at least two players on all-conference teams every year in the Lake Michigan Conference (1998-2005) and NACC. Sperber and Steinbock are also both the first Muskies to receive all-conference recognition twice in their career since Taylor Jahnke was named honorable mention all-NACC in both 2011 and 2013.
