KOHLER - The Lakeland College women's tennis team faced a tough opponent and was defeated by Concordia University Wisconsin in its final home match of the season Saturday morning at the Sports Core.
The Falcons scored a 7-2 match win over the Muskies, improving to 9-1 overall and 9-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference. Concordia stayed one win behind first place Edgewood College in the conference standings, while the Muskies dropped to 5-7 overall and 3-7 in the NAC with one match remaining in the regular season.
Lakeland scored its two wins at singles. Erica Hoffmann (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) defeated Callie Reinke at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, improving to 9-3 at singles this season. Lynn Pipke (Fr.-Greenfield, Wis.) also won at No. 4 singles, defeating Ashley Knoll in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-2.
The Muskies also were competitive in three losses at doubles. Jenna Oberthaler (Jr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) and Samantha Tonn (Fr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) were defeated by Emily McCormick and Taylor Resczynski 8-5 at No. 3 doubles, while Hoffmann and Brittany Jurek (Jr.-Kingsford, Mich.) lost to Reinke and Knoll 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Pipke and April Schmitz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also were defeated 8-3 by Julie Spransy and Jackie Ward at No. 1 doubles.
Jurek lost at singles for just the second time this season, falling to McCormick 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Schmitz was defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles by Spransy, Ward defeated Oberthaler 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Resczynski upended Alissa Stephani (So.-Appleton, Wis.) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Lakeland wraps up the regular season on Tuesday when it faces Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee at 4 p.m.
