KOHLER – The Lakeland College women's tennis team continued what so far has been an outstanding season with another victory Tuesday afternoon, defeating Alverno College 9-0 at Sports Core.
The Muskies improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference this season. Both marks carry significance, as they already have tied Lakeland's best-ever previous marks for wins in a season since joining the NACC in 2006.
The Muskies finished 6-7 overall and 4-7 in conference last year, but this year's team has a chance to blow those marks away. Lakeland also needs just one more win to clinch a winning season for the first time since 2003, when the Muskies went 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference.
Lakeland was strong from top to bottom against Alverno (0-5 overall, 0-3 NACC).
Victoria Powelson (
So.-Ishpeming, Mich.) again led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jordanna Farkas at No. 1 singles, and
Lynn Pipke (
So.-Greenfield, Wis.) defeated Libby Kent 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Powelson and Pipke also defeated Farkas and Laeren Yates 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.
Erica Hoffmann (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) also cruised at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 over Damanique Drake, while
Maggie Liston (
Fr.-Lemont, Ill.) had the biggest challenge of any Muskie, losing the first set of her No. 4 singles match before rallying to defeat Yates 3-6, 6-1, 11-9. Hoffmann and Liston also were 8-4 winners over Kent and Drake in No. 2 doubles.
Brittany Jurek (
Sr.-Gladstone, Mich.) improved to 6-0 in singles this year, defeating Charmaine Clark at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1.
Jenna Oberthaler (
Sr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) also dominated her No. 6 singles match, defeating Sam Kasprzak 6-1, 6-0. The duo of Jurek and Oberthaler also easily handled Clark and Devin Bach in a No. 3 doubles match, winning 8-1.
The Muskies face a key doubleheader this weekend as they travel Saturday to face Aurora University at 10 a.m. in Aurora, Ill. Lakeland then will travel to face Benedictine University at 2 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
