KOHLER – The Lakeland College women's tennis team made Senior Day a memorable one in a season to remember, rolling past Milwaukee School of Engineering 8-1 Saturday morning at Sports Core.
The Muskies continued to build on school records for matches won in a season, improving to 9-2 overall and 7-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland also clinched a berth in the NACC Team Tournament for the first time in school history, and will be one of six teams competing for the conference championship when the tourney is held in the spring.
Seniors
Erica Hoffmann (
Sheboygan Falls, Wis.),
Brittany Jurek (
Gladstone, Mich.) and
Jenna Oberthaler (
Iron Mountain, Mich.) were honored as part of Senior Day activities, and all three had good days.
All three won their individual singles matches. Hoffmann defeated Michelle Roubik 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Jurek topped Kelsey Weinkauf 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Oberthaler outlasted Melanie Avery 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
The seniors also were victorious in their doubles play, including Jurek and Oberthaler teaming up at No. 3 doubles to defeat Weinkauf and Avery 8-5. Hoffmann also paired with
Maggie Liston (
Fr.-Lemont, Ill.) at No. 2 doubles to defeat Ashley Albrecht and Michelle Lee 9-7.
Victoria Powelson (
So.-Ishpeming, Mich.) and
Lynn Pipke (
So.-Greenfield, Wis.) also again had good days. Powelson defeated Marly Trier at No. 1 singles by a 6-3, 6-2 score, and Pipke easily handled Albrecht 6-1, 6-1. Powelson and Pipke also were winners at No. 1 doubles, handling Trier and Michelle Roubik 8-1.
MSOE (3-11 overall, 3-7 NACC) got its lone win at No. 4 singles, where Roubik defeated Liston 6-0, 6-2.
The Muskies are home again Sunday to face Concordia University Chicago at noon at Sports Core, in a match being made up from Aug. 31.
