FOND DU LAC – The Lakeland College women's tennis team went undefeated in singles matches and once again showed signs of being a contender in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference this year, powering through Marian University 8-1 in a conference match Wednesday afternoon.
The Muskies again looked good in disposing of their second straight conference opponent by a convincing score, improving to 2-0 overall and in the NACC. Marian dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Victoria Powelson (
So.-Ishpeming, Mich.) and
Lynn Pipke (
So.-Greenfield, Wis.) led the team in singles and doubles, combining for a 3-0 record. Powelson easily defeated Ann Goyke 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Pipke defeated Brynn Hartzell by the same score at No. 2 singles. The duo also pulled out a tough match at No. 1 doubles against Goyke and Hartzell, holding on for a 9-7 win.
Erica Hoffmann (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) defeated Marian's Robyn Cords at No. 3 singles, also by a 6-0, 6-2 score.
Maggie Liston (
Fr.-Lemont, Ill.) lost the first set to Rachel Stoffell at No. 4 singles before bouncing back for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
Brittany Jurek (
Sr.-Gladstone, Mich.) and
Jenna Oberthaler (
Sr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) were both dominant again as well. Jurek defeated Melissa Spannbauer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while Oberthaler beat Ahtyanna Lyons 6-2, 6-1 in a No. 6 singles match. Jurek and Oberthaler also easily defeated Spannbauer and Lyons at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 score.
Marian's sole win came at No. 2 doubles, where Cords and Stoffell easily defeated Hoffmann and Liston by an 8-1 score.
Lakeland is back in action Thursday afternoon when it faces Ripon College in a non-conference match at home at Sports Core in Kohler at 5 p.m.
