ROCKFORD, ILL. – The Lakeland College women's tennis team swept Rockford University before being dealt its first loss of the season by Edgewood College Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies lost by an 8-1 score to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference powerhouse Eagles, who were picked first in the NACC preseason poll. Lakeland still is 4-1 overall this season and 3-1 in conference play.
Brittany Jurek (
Sr.-Gladstone, Mich.) was the lone Muskie to win both of her matches on the day. Playing at No. 5 singles, she blanked Alexis Ford of Rockford 6-0, 6-0, and then earned a hard-fought three set win over Kristen Boone of Edgewood, winning 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 10-1.
Lakeland breezed past Rockford with little trouble.
Victoria Powelson (
So.-Ishpeming, Mich.) and
Erica Hoffmann (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) joined Jurek as players winning singles matches without losing a game, with Powelson defeating Angela Martinez at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0, and Hoffmann winning at No. 3 singles over Carla Ramirez by the same score.
Lynn Pipke (
So.-Greenfield, Wis.) rolled past Jessica Segalla at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and
Jenna Oberthaler (
Sr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) won by the same score over Shannon Hoppes in the No. 6 singles match.
Maggie Liston (
Fr.-Lemont, Ill.) was the lone singles player to receive a serious challenge, as she outlasted Monica Parsons at No. 4 singles 5-7, 7-6, 10-7.
Lakeland also dominated the doubles matches. Powelson and Pipke shut out Martinez and Segalla 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and Hoffmann and Liston beat Parsons and Ashley Keola 8-2 at No. 2. Jurek and Oberthaler received a challenge at No. 3 doubles before defeating Ramirez and Tanya Valentic 9-8.
The Muskies are in action again Monday when they travel to Milwaukee to face Mount Mary College at 5 p.m. for a non-conference match.
