MEQUON – The Lakeland College wrestling team came close on a number of occasions but came up just shy of finishing with an individual champion at the Northern Wrestling Association conference tournament Saturday.

The Muskies had four wrestlers finish second in their respective weight classes, helping the team finish third in the team standings with 47.5 points. Host school Concordia University Wisconsin won the team title with 107.5 points, while Milwaukee School of Engineering was second with 64 and Knox (Ill.) College was fourth with 27 points.

Lakeland's closest shave came at 165 pounds, where Mitchell Fucile (So.-Chilton, Wis.) lost a narrow 5-3 decision to Concordia's Casey Kenealy in the final. That match came after a tough semifinal in which Fucile edged Peter Kootstra of MSOE by a 6-5 score.

The Muskies also had a good showing at 184 lbs., where Eddie Terres (Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) won his first match by fall in just 1:17 over James Beeson of MSOE. Terres was defeated in the final by Mitchell Slatton of Concordia by a 5-2 score.

Jake Maechtle (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) also placed second at 157 lbs. Maechtle won his first match by technical fall over TreJon House of MSOE before losing in the final by fall to Pierce Holtfreter of Concordia in 6:03.

Mat Gonzalez (So.-Manistique, Mich.) also added a second-place finish for Lakeland at 149 lbs. Gonzalez won a 6-2 decision over Austin Ventris of Knox in the semifinals before losing to Quentin Lueck of Concordia in the final by fall in 2:24.

Jeremy Kroeger (Sr.-Villa Park, Ill.) and Andrew Wagner (Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) also both competed for Lakeland. Both finished with 1-1 records, with Kroeger defeating Ryan Cook of Concordia by fall at 197 lbs. and Wagner winning his second match by forfeit at 285 lbs.
