ALMA, Mich. – Jesse Burg (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and Evan Haferkorn (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) both placed top in their classes to lead a group of eight wrestlers posting top eight finishes for the Lakeland University men's wrestling team competed at the Mid-States Invitational hosted by Alma College

Burg led the way at 157 pounds with a dominant run that opened with an 8-0 major decision over Chasen Kazmierczak of Wabash (Ind.) College. He followed with a commanding 17-1 tech fall win in the second round before earning back-to-back decision victories, including a 7-1 win over Kamden Hood from the University of Olivet (Mich.) and an 11-8 decision against Brian Barret Jr of Manchester (Ind.) College. In the championship match, Burg defeated Brady Schiffli of Manchester by an 11-3 major decision.

Haferkorn continued the momentum at 165 lbs., recording back-to-back tech falls over Landon Irvin of Ohio Northern University and Adrian (Mich.) College's Paden Gordiner. He followed with a narrow 5-4 decision over Brayden Kuhling from the Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University. The first-place match saw Haferkorn secure a late reversal with 46 seconds remaining in the third period before turning into a four-point near fall, defeating Cooper McCloy of Wabash.

Jacob Hillshafer (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) and Diego Morales (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) posted second-place finishes in their respective classes. After receiving a first-round bye, Hillshafer recorded a 16-0 tech fall over Tyler Riedel of Adrian, followed by a 16-5 major decision against Manchester's Evan Smith. A close 7-3 decision over Bryce Brown of Mount St. Joseph advanced him to the championship match, where he fell 6-3 decision to Seth Miller of Ohio Northern. Morales powered through the heavyweight bracket with four consecutive falls before a 14-3 major decision loss to Titus Waters of Wabash in the championship match.

Lakeland will take a week off before competing at the NCAA Region 7 Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Feb. 27-28.
