Five Muskies still alive after opening day of NCAA Region VII regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Five members of the Lakeland University men's wrestling team posted two wins each and stayed alive in their respective weight classes after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Region VII regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Jacob Hillshafer (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.), Jesse Burg (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.), Evan Haferkorn (Jr.-Norway, Mich.), Will Ohman (So.-Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Diego Morales (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) all will wrestle a second day, giving Lakeland five of its 10 entries still competing Saturday.

Hillshafter is still alive at 141 pounds after winning his opening match, losing in the quarterfinals but bouncing back for a 9-1 major decision over Matt Lucansy of Augustana (Ill.) College. Burg bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to defeat Ashton Massaro of Aurora University with a 5-1 decision at 149 lbs.

Haferkorn was involved in three close matches at 165 lbs. and won two, including a 5-1 decision over Diego Snell-Martinez of Milwaukee School of Engineering in his opener and then a 3-0 win over Christian Gilbert of Carthage College. Ohman posted two pins at 174 lbs., including one over Isaac Hunter of St. John's (Minn.) University in 6 minutes, 22 seconds, and Morales battled back after a close loss in his second match at 285 lbs. to pin Camden Roofener of Linfield (Ore.) University in the wrestleback.

The top three finishers in each weight class will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships, to be held March 13-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
