Muskies, Spartans both much different teams for rematch in NACC tourney

The Lakeland College women's basketball team will shoot for its first win in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament in six years when it travels to face Aurora (Ill.) University in a quarterfinal Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Aurora's Thornton Gymnasium.

The Muskies (14-11 overall) enter the tournament as the fifth seed, while the Spatans (15-10 overall) are the fourth seed. The winner advances to face NACC regular season champion Concordia Wisconsin Thursday night in a semifinal in Mequon.

Lakeland has not won a game in the NACC tourney since claiming the 2010 title, when it defeated Alverno, Wisconsin Lutheran and Benedictine. The Muskies are 0-3 since, including a 78-66 loss last year to second-seeded Benedictine in the quarterfinals. Lakeland was the seventh seed last year, but the tournament has been reduced from eight teams to six this year.

The Spartans won the only meeting between the teams in the regular season, scoring a 77-68 victory in Aurora. That was back on Dec. 5, more than 2 1/2 months ago, and both teams are significantly different now. Both Lakeland and Aurora finished the regular season winning 12 of their last 16 games after slow starts through their first nine games, when the Muskies went 2-7 and the Spartans 3-6.

Live video and statistics for Tuesday night's game will be available from Aurora at http://athletics.aurora.edu/sports/2014/12/4/GameViewer.aspx?id=256.
