VERONA, Wis. –
Luke Bacci (
Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.) singled in the go-ahead run on a two-run single in the eighth inning to cap the Lakeland College baseball team's comeback in a 9-6 win over Edgewood College Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies snapped a four-game losing skid with a win in the first game of a doubleheader before the Eagles came back for an 8-2 win in the nightcap. Lakeland is now 7-12 overall and at 4-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference has already surpassed its win total in conference games in each of the previous two years.
Edgewood held leads of 1-0, 5-2 and 6-4 in the first game, but the Muskies rallied with five runs over the final three innings.
Jared Rear (
Sr.-Belleville, Wis.) and
Connor Hilburn (
Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) drove in runs in the seventh to tie the game, and Bacci came through with the clutch hit with the bases loaded with a two-run single down the left field line to score
Bryan Bridges (
Fr.-North Chicago, Ill.) and
Travis Regalado (
Fr.-Willcox, Ariz.).
Lakeland added a run in the ninth when Hilburn struck out on a ball in the dirt but reached and got to second on a throwing error by the catcher, then went to third after another error by the right fielder. Regalado followed two batters later with a single up the middle for the final run.
Rear finished with three hits and drove in three runs, Hilburn added two hits and three RBIs and Bacci and
Peyton Knoll (
Fr.-Linden, Mich.) both added two hits each.
Travis Stever (
Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) came on in relief and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while fanning two to get his first win of the season.
The Muskies were unable to duplicate their offensive prowess in the second game after again falling behind early. Edgewood (11-15 overall, 7-5 NACC) scored two runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings, while Lakeland could only score two in the top of the fifth when
Bryce Skelton (
Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) doubled to right center to score Bacci and Rear.
Hilburn started and allowed six runs (five earned) with two strikeouts before giving way to
Joey McFeely (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.), who allowed two runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings.
Jody Harrison (
Fr.-Pontiac, Mich.) was the lone Lakeland player with two hits in the second game.
The Muskies are back home Wednesday to host St. Norbert College for a non-conference single nine-inning game beginning at 4 p.m.
