The Lakeland College baseball team had a rough day at the ballpark in losing both ends of a doubleheader against Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Muskies were defeated by scores of 10-0 and 14-0, with both scheduled nine-inning games ending after seven innings on account of the 10-run run. Lakeland dropped to 8-17 overall and is now 4-8 in conference play.
Little went right for the Muskies in either game, while the Falcons (15-13 overall, 8-4 NACC) seemed to take advantage of every error, close call or bad hop that went in their favor.
Both games got away from Lakeland quickly, with Concordia taking advantage with a number of big innings. The Falcons scored four runs in the third inning of the opener to take the lead and added four more in the seventh, and then scored six runs in the third inning of the nightcap to break out to an 8-0 lead.
Concordia hit a relatively light number of balls hard over the course of the day. The Muskies committed eight errors on the day but also were victimized by several bad hops on the infield, and even one off the fence. Lakeland's day could be summed up by the solo home run hit by Concordia pinch hitter Luke Wirtz in the seventh inning of the second game, which hit off the top of the fence and then bounded over.
Kenny Pekarek (
Jr.-Sagola, Mich.) was a bright spot at the plate with three hits on the day, including two in the second game.
Drew Richard (
So.-Kieler, Wis.) and
Bryce Skelton (
Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) added two hits each.
Tyler Gross pitched a shutout for Concordia in the opener, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out one. Seth Hougesen was dominant in the second game, allowing five hits without a walk and striking out nine.
The Muskies are in action again tomorrow when they face Wisconsin Lutheran College for a doubleheader in Milwaukee beginning at noon.
