Jody Harrison (
Fr.-Pontiac, Mich.) had a big game at the plate and
Connor Hilburn (
Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) picked up his first collegiate win pitching as the Lakeland College baseball team topped Wisconsin Lutheran College 7-5 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.
The Warriors came back for a 10-0 win in seven innings in the second game of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference back-to-back. Lakeland is now 9-18 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
Freshmen Harrison and Hilburn played big roles in the opening win with standout performances. Harrison went 4-for-5 at the plate, scored a pair of runs and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth with an RBI single to put the Muskies ahead 5-4.
Hilburn also drove in a pair of runs at the plate and earned the win on the mound, giving the Lakeland relief corps a break by going eight innings and allowing 10 hits and five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts. He picked up his first win in three decisions, while
Luke Kelly (
Sr.-Marinette, Wis.) came on in the ninth and recorded his third save of the season.
Luke Bacci (
Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.) also had two hits in the opener, while
Drew Richard (
So.-Kieler, Wis.) and
Brandon Glaeser (
Sr.-Newton, Wis.) also drove in runs. Both the Muskies and Warriors finished with 11 hits, but WLC committed four errors that led to three unearned runs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-19 overall, 5-9 NACC) bounced back in the second game for a convincing win that included two big innings. The Warriors scored three in the first inning and then added seven more runs in the fourth inning.
Brock Vredeveld pitched a four-hit shutout for WLC, striking out four, and six Warrior players finished with at least two hits.
Jeremy Surowiec (
Fr.-Lowell, Ind.) absorbed some innings for Lakeland in taking the loss, allowing 14 hits total in six innings. All but two of Wisconsin Lutheran's 14 hits were singles.
Lakeland returns to action Tuesday when it travels to De Pere to face St. Norbert College for a single nine-inning game. Before that game, the two teams will finish their contest started on Wednesday, when the Green Knights led 12-3 entering the eighth inning before the game was suspended due to darkness.
