Game Recap: Baseball |

Muskies rally in opener, win first game of Senior Day DH with Rockford

Drew Richard (So.-Kieler, Wis.) doubled to drive in two runs, including the go-ahead run that put the Lakeland College baseball team on its way to a 5-3 win over Rockford (Ill.) University in the first game of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon on Senior Day for the Muskies.

The visiting Regents came back for a 5-2 win in the second game, as the Muskies split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill for the fifth time this season. Lakeland is now 11-22 overall on the season and 7-11 in conference play.

Luke Mandich (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) pitched a complete game in the opener and allowed nine hits and three runs with seven strikeouts. Mandich kept the Regents off the board in every inning save for a three-run fifth and picked up a hard-earned first victory of the season.

The Muskies trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth before beginning their comeback. Bryce Skelton (Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) singled and Travis Regalado (Fr.-Willcox, Ariz.) was hit by a pitch before Richard doubled to center to score both and put Lakeland ahead. Brandon Glaeser (Sr.-Newton, Wis.) followed with a single and later scored when Kyle Delahaut (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) reached on an error.

Richard finished 3-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the second inning. Skelton also finished with three hits and Jared Rear (Sr.-Belleville, Wis.) had two hits plus an RBI single in the first inning to get the Muskies on the board.

Rockford (17-19 overall, 7-9 NACC) fought back in the second game on the strength of solid pitching, as Thomas Goodyear and Thomas Bolen combined on a four-hitter. Goodyear allowed two hits and struck out eight over seven innings, and Bolen came on and pitched two scoreless innings to close it out.

Lakeland starting pitcher Connor Hilburn (Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) kept the Regents at bay most of his seven-inning stint, trailing just 1-0 into the sixth inning before the visitors scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Hilburn finished allowing 10 hits and five runs with three strikeouts in taking the loss.

The Muskies hung around by scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Glaeser singled to score Richard in the seventh to break up the shutout, and Rear's double in the eighth scored Luke Bacci (Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.) and left runners at second and third with nobody out, but a promising inning fizzled after that with a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up.

Glaeser had a pair of hits and capped a four-hit day. Glaeser, Bacci, Delahaut, Mandich, Rear, Skelton and Luke Kelly (Marinette, Wis.) all were honored in between games as part of Senior Day activities for Lakeland.

The Muskies will play one final home doubleheader on Tuesday when they welcome Lawrence University for a twinbill of games that were originally scheduled for April 5th. Game time on Tuesday is 1 p.m.
