Muskies top Cougars for much-awaited tennis dual win

The Lakeland University women's tennis won five matches at singles and two more at doubles to break through for its first dual match win in almost two years with a 7-2 defeat of Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference dual match Saturday afternoon.

Carly Brault (Jr.-Brillion, Wis.), Rachel Conery (Jr.-Vulcan, Mich.), Ann Schroeder (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) and Tyner Strawn (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) all won at both singles and doubles and the Muskies snapped a 19-match streak without a win that dated back to 2014. Lakeland (1-3 overall, 1-2 NACC) for the first time in almost exactly two years, since a 5-4 defeat of Marian University on Sept. 12, 2014.

The ledger of wins included a near sweep in singles play. Schroeder posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nikki Ganze at No. 2 singles, and every flight after her won as well. Brault defeated Kaylyn Anderson 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Mikayla Hilton (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) topped Hannah Gallup 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, Strawn topped Margaret Jones 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Conery added a 6-1, 6-0 roll over Paige Brown at No. 6 singles.

Schroeder and Strawn also teamed up for an 8-5 win over Gallup and Anderson at No. 2 doubles, and Brault and Conery handled Brown and Jones 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Lakeland's only two losses also were narrow, with Emma Schad (So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) winning the second set but falling to Amelia Wellman 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Schad and Hilton also lost a close 8-5 result to Ganze and Wellman at No. 1 doubles.

The match began outdoors on Concordia's campus courts, but was delayed twice by rain. Eventually, singles matches were moved to the Oak Park Tennis & Fitness Center to complete the match.

Lakeland then boarded the bus and traveled north to face Alverno College on the campus of Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. The Muskies found less success, falling to the Inferno 9-0.

Brault had the best individual performance, winning six games but losing 6-2, 6-4 to Michelle Alexander at No. 3 singles. Brault and Conery also were competitive at No. 3 doubles, falling 8-4 to Lia Hutchins and Makayla Butler.

The Muskies are back in action again on Sunday when they host Cornell (Iowa) College for a non-conference match at 9:30 a.m. at Sports Core in Kohler.
