WAUKESHA –
Ann Schroeder (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) earned her first collegiate singles win but the Lakeland University women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Carroll University in the team's season-opening dual.
Schroeder rallied after losing the first set to Teal Zimmerman at Number 2 singles to prevail in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-4. Schroeder finished winless last year while facing the tough task of playing at No. 2 singles as a freshman but started the new year right with a win in her first match of the season.
The match also was marked by near misses for the Muskies, who lost a second singles match in a long third set and also were close in all three doubles matches.
Carly Brault (
Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) almost gave Lakeland a second singles win, taking her first set at No. 3 singles before Lauren Jirik rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 win.
Emma Schad (
So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and
Mikayla Hilton (
Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) played well at No. 1 doubles, falling to Zimmerman and Anna Arden 9-7. Schroeder and
Tyner Strawn (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also lost a close 8-5 decision to Jirik and Nicole Garcia at No. 2 doubles, while Brault and
Rachel Conery (
Jr.-Vulcan, Mich.) fell to Megan Wiersma and Vanessa Ignatew 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Lakeland returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin at 4 p.m. at Sports Core in Kohler in the team's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
