MSOE bounces Lakeland out of NACC women’s tennis tourney quarterfinals

MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University women's tennis team faced a tough task in its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament match in four years and was defeated by Milwaukee School of Engineering in the tourney quarterfinals Monday evening at Lake Park.

The third-seeded Raiders posted a 5-0 win, getting to five wins before the Muskies could earn a win and resulting in the remaining four matches not being finished. MSOE advanced to a semifinal match against No. 2 Edgewood College on Saturday.

Sixth-seeded Lakeland was the lowest seed in the six-team field and closed out its season with a 5-11 overall record. The Muskies had lost to MSOE 7-2 in their regular season meeting, getting victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but neither of those matches were completed this time as the Raiders took an early 3-0 lead with doubles play first.

Lakeland won three games each at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, including Ellie Roe (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and Abby Juozapaitis (Fr.-North Prairie, Wis.) falling 8-3 at No. 1 to Carly Grant and Sammy Soeder. Emma Schad (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and Calley Wesemann (Fr.-Watertown, Wis.) also were defeated by the same score at No. 2 doubles by Katie Clements and Cierra Smith, while MSOE's Kim Baffin and Cali Bonie blanked Carly Brault (Sr.-Brillion, Wis.) and Rachel Conery (Sr.-Vulcan, Mich.) 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

MSOE (11-9 overall) closed out the match by posting victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Soeder shut out Ann Schroeder (Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Clements defeated Schad 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

The Muskies were playing in the NACC tourney for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when they were the No. 2 seed and were defeated by No. 3 Concordia University Wisconsin 5-3 in the semifinals. Lakeland's five dual wins this season were still easily their largest total since that year, surpassing the team's total of three wins over the previous three years.
