Calley Wesemann (
So.-Watertown, Wis.) picked right up on her success from a year ago, having a hand in both wins as the Lakeland University women's tennis team was defeated by Ripon College 7-2 in its season debut at Sports Core on Friday.
Wesemann swept Morgan Makar in two sets for a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles and also teamed with
Abby Juozapaitis (
So.-North Prairie, Wis.) for an 8-5 victory over Makar and MacKenzie Warner at No. 2 doubles. Wesemann won her first-ever collegiate match at No. 3 singles, doing so after leading the Muskies with a 10-4 mark at singles a year ago at No. 4, 5 and 6 flights.
Ripon won the remaining seven matches, though Juozapaitis very nearly picked up a third win for Lakeland. She won the first set against Warner at No. 5 singles before falling 3-6, 6-0, 10-8.
Other top showings at singles for the Muskies came from
Ellie Roe (
So.-Plymouth, Wis.) and
Ann Schroeder (
Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.). Roe won four games while being defeated by Brianna Bembenek at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1, while Schroeder was defeated by Hannah Ryback 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Emma Schad (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and
Jessica Leicht (
Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) also won three games in their No. 3 doubles match, losing to Sam Kiesner and Kate Peroutka 8-3.
Lakeland's dual match Saturday against Beloit College was cancelled due to rain in the Beloit area. The Muskies return to play Tuesday when it hosts Alverno College for its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener at 4 p.m. at Sports Core.
