Box Score 2 STEVENS POINT – A tiebreaker was the difference as the Lakeland University women's tennis team just missed a chance to knock off the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a non-conference dual Sunday at UWSP's home courts.
The teams split six matches in singles play, but the Pointers won two of three in doubles thanks to a 9-8 victory by Anna Dobbe and Angelica Hernandez over the Muskies'
Abby Juozapaitis (
So.-North Prairie, Wis.) and
Emma Schad (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) at the No. 2 flight. The UWSP team won 9-8 after taking the tiebreaker by a 10-4 score.
Lakeland's
Ellie Roe (
So.-Plymouth, Wis.) and
Calley Wesemann (
So.-Watertown, Wis.) both were double winners Sunday. Roe defeated Leah Hollander 6-1, 7-6 (10-5) at No. 1 singles, while Wesemann defeated Kaylee Woelfel 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The duo also paired up at No. 1 doubles and blanked Hollander and Woelfel 8-0, improving to 4-2 as a doubles team.
Juozapaitis also scored a three-set win at No. 5 singles in an extra-long match, edging Lea Beckman 6-4, 3-6, 13-11. Besides the No. 2 doubles near miss, the Muskies also came close at No. 3 doubles, with
Jessica Leicht (
Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and
Ann Schroeder (
Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) falling 8-5 to Beckman and Rebecca Goska.
The dual was the second of the weekend for Lakeland (4-3 overall), which also was defeated by Marian University 9-0 on Saturday in Fond du Lac in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. The Muskies went without a win for the first time this season against the NACC-leading Sabres, who improved to 3-0 in conference duals.
Lakeland was competitive in all three doubles matches, with the closest loss coming when Marian's Celeste Degeneffe and Brenda Ordonez defeated Juozapaitis and Schad 8-5 in No. 2 doubles play. Roe and Wesemann also lost an 8-3 decision to Meg Hartzell and Emma Lewandowski, while Leicht and Schroeder also were defeated by the same score by Kyrsten Bruce and Sarah Mereness at No. 3 doubles.
The Muskies return to play Wednesday when they travel to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 4 p.m. at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, Wis.
