The Lakeland University women's soccer team will get a bonus home match of sorts when it hosts Maranatha Baptist University Monday night at 7 p.m. at John Taylor Memorial Field in the team's home opener.
The Muskies were originally scheduled to travel to Maranatha's home field in Watertown for the match, but it was moved to Lakeland due to heavy rains in southern Wisconsin over the past two weeks making the Sabercats' field unplayable. That gave the Muskies a home match four days earlier than their original scheduled home opener Friday night against Rockford University.
Lakeland comes in with a 1-0-1 record after going undefeated on its season-opening road trip to the Twin Cities and then north to Superior. The Muskies defeated North Central (Minn.) University 2-1 on Saturday behind a game-winner in the 82nd minute by
Hope Cerney (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.), and then played to a scoreless draw with UW-Superior on Sunday as freshman
Erin Tomlinson (
Madison, Wis.) earned her first collegiate shutout.
Maranatha Baptist enters the contest 0-1 after a 5-0 loss to Cornell (Iowa) College in its opener on Friday. The Sabercats finished 6-8-1 last year while competing as an NCAA Division III independent, and are led by Alexis Sponable, who scored 16 goals a year ago.
