Series history: The series between Lakeland and Edgewood goes back to Lakeland's early years of playing women's basketball. Complete series records are unavailable, but in known meetings the Muskies hold a 40-24 all-time series lead. The Eagles swept both games last season to get their first sweep of the Muskies since the 2014-15 season. Lakeland will lack no motivation for this game after a pair of double-digit Edgewood wins last year, the Eagles first prevailing 68-50 at home Nov. 24, 2018 and then defeating the Muskies 72-58 at the Woltzen Gymnasium on Jan. 24, 2019. Prior to last year, Lakeland had won six straight against Edgewood, including most recently a 63-54 win at home Jan. 16, 2018.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at UW-Stevens Point 57-50 Wednesday
The Muskies again came up just short in defeat against another strong opponent in a rugged early season schedule. Lakeland staged a big fourth quarter rally, cutting a 17-point deficit down to four on three different occasions. The Pointers hung on down the stretch, making eight consecutive free throws over the final 1:14.
Amanda Majewski scored 10 points and led the team with seven rebounds and
Megan Will added 10 points plus six blocked shots. Lakeland hung in despite shooting 28.6% and being outrebounded 43-24, forcing UWSP into 24 turnovers.
Edgewood last time out: Won at Webster (Mo.) 69-50 last Saturday
The Eagles have been idle since last weekend, when they won the championship in the Webster University Tip-Off Classic in St. Louis, first defeating Illinois College 72-43 last Friday before topping the host Gorloks in the championship game. Alyssa Lemirande was named tournament MVP after leading the Eagles with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Webster for her first double-double of the season. Lexi Walter added 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks on Saturday and also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
About Edgewood: The Eagles are off to a 4-0 start, with all four of their wins by at least 19 points. Edgewood has some unfinished business this season even after finishing 14-11 last year, continuing a revival for a program that posted a 0-25 record just two years earlier. Edgewood finished 11-9 in the NACC but missed out on qualifying for the six-team NACC Tournament after losing their final three games of the regular season. Chaia Huff is in her fourth year as coach of the Eagles, who were picked to finish sixth heading into this season.
Over the century mark: Lakeland's Majewski became the 10th player in the school's women's basketball history to knock down 100 three-pointers in her career with her first triple against UW-Stevens Point. Majewski is now tied for ninth all-time with
Taylor Jandrin (2010-14) with 101 career threes, and she is one behind Mary Dennewitz (2007-11) in eighth with 102. Sara Langenhorst also is three ahead of Majewski in seventh with 104 threes from 2001-05.
