Series history: 30th meeting, Lakeland leads 22-7
This is the first meeting this season between the Muskies and Stars, and due to unbalanced conference scheduling it is also the two teams' first matchup at the Woltzen Gymnasium since the 2016-17 season. Lakeland has won 11 straight over Dominican, including a 63-54 victory on the road just over a year ago on Jan. 12, 2019, as.... The Muskies also won the teams' lone meeting in River Forest, Ill., in the 2017-18 season, and also posted a 56-26 win Jan. 7, 2017, in the teams' last matchup at Lakeland. Dominican's last win over the Muskies was a 71-68 victory at home Dec. 3, 2011.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Concordia Chicago 66-58 Thursday
The Muskies saw their six-game winning streak in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play ended as the Cougars rallied with a big second half to pull the surprise at home. Lakeland led 36-29 at halftime, but Concordia made seven three-pointers in the second half and started both the third and fourth quarters strong in its comeback. CUC drilled 11 three-pointers in all, the most by a Muskies opponent this season.
Janai' Farr scored 15 points off the bench and
Morgan Zenon added a career-high 13 points plus seven rebounds for Lakeland, which committed a season-high 22 turnovers and was cold from long range, making 4 of 23 from behind the three-point line.
Dominican last time out: Won at Rockford 74-52 Thursday
The Stars won their fifth straight game, including their fourth consecutive in the NACC, heating up with 24 points in the second quarter after the teams were close for the first ten minutes. Dominican built a 38-25 halftime lead and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Alexis Hoskins scored 16 points, Amari Stafford chipped in 13 and Timiya Ray added 12 and the Stars forced 29 Regents turnovers to win despite Rockford shooting 45% from the field.
About the Stars: Dominican is on track for its third straight winning season overall and looks to follow up last year's breakthrough performance when the Stars finished 17-10 overall and advanced to the NACC Tournament semifinals after defeating Aurora for their first NACC tourney win since 2012. Dominican was picked to finish fifth in this year's conference's preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors, one spot behind Lakeland, and the Stars feature an experienced nucleus with four senior starters (Hoskins, Ray, Stafford and Nyema Burns), including three three-year starters in that group.
NACC logjam: As teams near the midway point of the 20-game conference schedule, the NACC standings are closely bunched at the top. Seven teams are separated by three games or less from first to seventh in the standings, and in particular there is a four-way for fourth at 6-3. Lakeland and Dominican are two teams tied for the spot along with Aurora and Concordia Wisconsin, but two of the teams will gain separation from the other two after Saturday as the Spartans and Falcons also face off.
