Series history:Â Lakeland and Marian are longtime rivals who have been playing since the 1970s and the early stages of both schools' women's basketball programs. Complete series records are unavailable, but in available records the Muskies hold a 62-15 series lead since 1982-83. Lakeland has won the last ten meetings, including a narrow 56-53 victory over the Sabres earlier this season on Dec. 7, 2019. Marian's last win in the series was by a 66-63 score in overtime here at Lakeland on Feb. 12, 2014. The Muskies have dominated the series for a number of years now, having won 50 of the last 54 overall.Â
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Wisconsin Lutheran 69-49 Wednesday
Wisconsin Lutheran darted out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and the Muskies dropped their third straight game. WLC made 10 three-pointers and never trailed while the Muskies shot 32.6% from the field, making 15 of 46 shots, including 7 of 18 from three-point range (38.9%). The Muskies also struggled from the free throw line, hitting 12 of 23 (52.2%).
Janai' Farr hit four three-pointers to lead Lakeland with 12 points, and
Hayley Walding also added a career-high 11 points off the bench, making all four of her shots and also tying for team honors with four rebounds.
Marian last time out: Lost at Edgewood 69-36 Wednesday
The Sabres lost to second-place Edgewood in Madison 69-39 Wednesday. In a game where neither team shot well from beyond the arc, the Sabres made just four of 25 three-point attempts, including one in a ten-point first half. Marian played a close third quarter, but a 20% shooting percentage from the field ultimately sunk the Sabres. Carley Wilson, Claire Levendoski, and Morgan Johnson each had eight points to lead Marian, and Paris Harris grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
About the Sabres: Marian's loss on Wednesday was its eighth in its last nine games. The Sabres have struggled of late, but earlier in the season were competitive in many of their losses, with five of their first seven losses coming by seven points or less. Christine Keller is in her second year leading the Marian program, and the Sabres have NACC wins over Concordia Chicago, Alverno, and most recently a 78-48 win over Illinois Tech on Jan. 14.
Recapping the first meeting: In their first matchup on Dec. 7,
Amanda Majewski scored a career-high 19 points as the Muskies fought off the Sabres in a close 56-53 win in Fond du Lac. The Muskies led most of the way, but Marian clawed back to within three with 8:27 left in the game. With 51 seconds left, the Muskies led 55-48, but a three-point play from Paris Harris and a layup from Morgan Johnson the next possession made it 55-53 with 13 seconds to play. Majewski split a pair of free throws and a tying three-point attempt by Claire Levendoski was off target as time expired.
