Series history: 26th meeting, Lakeland leads 15-10
The Muskies and Spartans match up for the first of two meetings over the next ten days, as the Muskies will travel to Aurora on Feb. 11 for the second game of the season series. The Muskies swept both games from the Spartans last season, including most recently a 59-51 win here at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium on Feb. 11, 2019.
Miranda Jacobson had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds on a historic night as she became the 13th player in program history to score 1,000 points. The Spartans' last win over Lakeland was an 87-54 victory Feb. 18, 2018, when Aurora shot 54.2% and guard Bailey Kramer set a school single-game record with 15 assists. The series between the schools dates back to Dec. 3, 1982, when the Spartans won the first matchup 64-62 here at the Wehr Center Fieldhouse.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Edgewood 78-61 Thursday
Edgewood darted out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and the Muskies played from behind the rest of the way as the Eagles swept the season series. Edgewood led 20-4 in the first quarter and never saw its lead dip below ten again.
Megan Will had another strong night for the Muskies, scoring a team-high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting and blocking six shots. Will and
Morgan Zenon each had seven rebounds, and
Kacey Gardner tacked on eight points with five rebounds and two steals.
Aurora last time out: Lost to Dominican 89-75 Thursday
Despite outscoring the Stars by six in the fourth quarter, Aurora fell to fifth-place Dominican at home Thursday night. The Stars' shooting proved too much for the Spartans, as Dominican shot 51.6% from the field, including a blistering 55% (11 of 20) from beyond the arc. The Spartans' Meija Rabi led all scorers with 23 points, and Savannah Johnson scored 11 points and blocked two shots off the bench.
About the Spartans: Aurora's loss on Thursday was the sixth in their last seven games during a brutal stretch in their conference schedule, making today's game pivotal for the Stars' playoff hopes. Entering today, Aurora would be on the outside of the NACC Tournament looking in as the Muskies would have the sixth and final NACC playoff bid. The Spartans are looking for their third-straight tournament appearance; last season, Aurora earned the fifth seed with an 11-9 record, but lost to Dominican in the first round. The Spartans opened the season winning nine of their first 11 games, and they have one of the NACC's top guards in Julie Galauner, who leads the conference averaging 20.2 points per game.
Gardner climbing steals list: Lakeland's
Kacey Gardner is among the NACC leaders in steals, with her 54 steals total and 3.2 steals per game both ranking second in the league. Gardner also is close to entering the Muskies' top 10 for steals in a season, as she needs nine steals to tie Lynn Holguin (1988-89) and Becca Tilleman (2010-11) at 63 steals for ninth.
