Series history: 64th meeting, Lakeland leads 54-9
The series between Lakeland and Milwaukee School of Engineering dates back to 1987 and has been dominated by the Muskies over the long haul. Lakeland is back on another streak of late, winning the last seven meetings after the Raiders had previously won four of five. The Muskies won the first meeting this season just over a month ago by a 57-41 score in Milwaukee. Lakeland also swept two meetings last season, winning 60-47 at home Dec. 29, 2018 plus a 70-51 win in Milwaukee Jan. 31, 2019. The series dates back to Feb. 9, 1987, when Lakeland won the first game 89-34 at home, and the Muskies won the first 26 meetings and 39 of the first 40 overall.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Aurora 69-63 Saturday
The Muskies saw a 15-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter in a disheartening loss at home Saturday. Lakeland led for much of the game, but the Spartans outscored the Muskies 29-8 over the final ten minutes to win an important game in the battle for position in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland made five three-pointers in the first half, built a 34-24 halftime lead and held a double-digit lead for almost the entire third quarter. The Muskies made just two field goals in the fourth quarter, though, and the Spartans made 15 of 16 from the stripe in the final 10 minutes Rachel Hasko led the Muskies with a career-high 12 points, including two buzzer-beaters, and Kacey Gardner grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and dished out six assists.
MSOE last time out: Lost at Concordia Chicago 59-47 Saturday
The Raiders lost their only meeting of the season with the Cougars, falling on the road in River Forest. Concordia outscored MSOE 20-5 in the second quarter to take a 35-14 halftime lead, and MSOE could not climb back despite outscoring the Cougars 33-24 in the second half, including 22 points in the third quarter. Mikayla Dogs scored a game-high 15 points for the Raiders, and Amy Reiser added 11 points plus four steals.
About the Raiders: MSOE had won two straight games before its loss Saturday, but before that the Raiders lost nine straight games, all in conference. That streak came after MSOE won its first four NACC matchups. Hannah Trees is in her first season coaching a Raiders program that finished 13-13 overall and 11-9 to place sixth in the NACC last season and suffered a first-round tournament loss to Dominican. MSOE has been one of the better defensive teams in the conference, holding opponents to 56.5 points per game (4th in the NACC) and 37.4% shooting (5th).
Recapping the first meeting: Lakeland pulled away late in Milwaukee on Jan. 4 to clinch its first win of the decade. Lakeland had just a six-point lead after three quarters, but the Muskies outscored the Raiders 17-7 in the fourth quarter to push the margin of victory to double-digits. Rachel Hasko scored as many points in the fourth as the Raiders, scoring seven of her team-high and then-career high 11 in the final frame. Morgan Zenon also nearly finished with a double-double, adding nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
