Katelynn Gunderson (
Sr.-McFarland, Wis.) won four matches to lead the Lakeland University women's wrestling team in its initial competition of the 2021-22 season when the Muskies competed at the Pointer Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Gunderson finished with a 4-2 record at 123 pounds and teammate
Evelyn Adekunle (
Fr.-Evanston, Ill.) also won one of three matches on the day. The two were the only competitors for a small contingent on hand for the Muskies.
Gunderson opened with a quick 10-0 technical fall victory over Lydia Nelson of William Penn (Iowa) University before dropping a close 4-2 decision to Gabby Skidmore of Augsburg (Minn.) University. Gunderson then made a run through the consolation bracket, winning three straight matches to advance to the third-place match.
Gunderson pinned Angelica Torres Lima of UW-Stevens Point in 2 minutes, 47 seconds, and then defeated by Shainia Murray of McKendree (Ill.) University and Tateum Park of Augsburg by injury default. She then faced Skidmore for a second time in the match for third place and fell by a 6-2 decision to finish fourth.
Adekunle's collegiate debut started with a loss by fall to Alicia Mena-Chaves at 191 lbs. She came back to win a 7-3 decision over Melissa Jacobs of Augsburg before dropping a close 8-5 decision to Tabitha Breitrick of UW-Stevens Point.
The Muskies are in action next Nov. 19-20 when they travel to the Missouri Valley College Open in Marshall, Mo.
