Nickel, Bruton set records for Muskies at Pioneer Invitational

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Trenton Nickel (Sr.-Kiel, Wis.) and Kayla Bruton (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) both had big days to lead the Lakeland University men's and women's track & field teams at the Carroll University Pioneer Invitational Saturday.

Nickel set a new school record in the men's 200 meters and added an event win in the 400 meters, while Bruton set a new school best in the women's 200. The two sprinters highlighted a strong day for the Muskies that saw the men score a season-best 44 points to finish sixth of 10 teams while the women's squad finished ninth in the team standings.

Nickel ran the 200 in 22.64 seconds, breaking a five-year old school modern era record of 22.80 set by Kezlow Smith in 2016. He also was the winner in the 400, finishing in 50.43 to come in more than a second ahead of second-place Hunter Thelen of Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Bruton finished the women's 200 in 26.51, breaking the school mark of 26.89 she set in 2019 and coming in fifth in the event. She also placed fifth in the 400 with a personal-best time of 1:03.98, and her two top-five finishes accounted for eight of the women's team's nine points scored.

Lakeland nearly finished 1-2 in the men's 400, as Anthony Romens (So.-Slinger, Wis.) came in third in 51.64, just just one-hundredths behind MSOE's Thelen. Romens also came in sixth in the 200 with a time of 22.90, and Romens, Nickel, Kevon Holbrook (So.-Bourbonnais, Ill.) and Tyler Jensen (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also finished second in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:34.01, with Nickel making a charge on the final leg to pick up three positions.

Travis Eitel (Fr.-Pine Island, Minn.) also recorded a pair of top-five finishes in hurdling events. He finished fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.31 and also was fifth in the 110 hurdles finals in 18.08.

Jensen also came in 11th in the 400 with a time of 56.76 and Holbrook was 16th in the 800 in 2:10.68. Spencer Miesfeld (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also ran season-best times of 2:17.05 in the 800 and 5:00.30 in the 1,500 meters.

Delilah Vance (So.-Virocqua, Wis.) joined Bruton to give Lakeland two top-eight finishers in the women's 400, finishing in 1:05.82 to also score one point. She also was 18th in the 200 clocking in at 27.90.
