The Lakeland University women's basketball team looks to get rid of the bad taste left by a tough loss over the weekend when it hosts Marian University Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Broadcast Information:
Live video & live statistics: http://www.lakelandmuskies.com/muskieslive. Andy Damp is again calling the play-by-play for all Lakeland home basketball games this year.

Series history: The Muskies and Sabres are longtime rivals whose history goes back to Lakeland's early years playing the sport in the 1970s and who have played each other regularly since the days of the Lake Michigan Conference. Complete records are unavailable, but in known contests Lakeland holds a 65-16 advantage in 80 meetings. The Muskies had won 13 straight meetings until Marian earned a 66-62 win in the teams' first meeting this season two weeks ago on Jan. 25, its first win over the Muskies since 2014. Lakeland won both of last season's meetings at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium Feb. 26-27, 2021, rolling to a 74-48 win the first night and cruising to a 70-56 victory the second night. Even with the Sabres' win last month, the Muskies still have won 53 of the last 58 versus Marian.

Lakeland last time out: Lost to Rockford 60-54 Saturday
The Muskies suffered a disheartening loss at home as the Regents stole one late on Saturday. Lakeland trailed for just 16 seconds in the game, held a double-digit lead late in the third quarter and led again by seven in the fourth quarter, but Rockford took its first lead since 2-0 with 1:18 left and finished the game on a 17-4 run. Kerstin Sauerbrei scored 17 points and Lauren Downs added 14, and the two combined for seven three-pointers. The Muskies got off to a hot start, making 10 of their first 17 shots, but then went stone cold and finished the game shooting 30.9%. Rockford freshman star Anaya Davis also was a load to handle all game and finished with 32 points and 18 rebounds with her NCAA Division III-leading 17th double-double.

Marian last time out: Lost to Edgewood 82-65 Saturday
The Sabres trailed by just four in the fourth quarter before the Eagles went on a 13-1 run to pull away in the late stages. Marian had trouble shutting down Edgewood all game as the visiting Eagles were red-hot all game long, shooting 58.9% from the field. Paris Harris scored 20 points from and freshman Lexi Brakebush added 12 points off the bench, but the Sabres were never able to fully recover after falling behind 18-9 after one quarter and by as much as 14 in the first half. The loss was Marian's third straight since its win over Lakeland two weeks earlier.

Recapping the first meeting: Lakeland wiped out a 16-point second half deficit but Marian answered with a 7-0 in the final minutes to take control again and go on to the win. Marian led 46-30 in the third quarter before the Muskies rallied for a 58-57 lead with 3:11 to play, but Claire Levendoski hit a jumper and then a three-pointer and Paris Harris added two free throws for a 64-58 lead with 52 seconds left. The Muskies again started strong, making 10 of 18 shots in taking a 21-15 lead after one quarter, but the Sabres came back to take a 34-29 halftime lead. Both teams shot below 34% for the game (Lakeland 33.3%, Marian 33.9%), but the Sabres hit 19 of 27 free throws to the Muskies making 8 of 14 at the line. Harris piled up 18 points and 17 rebounds and Sierra Strope-Robinson added 15 points to lead Marian. Kacey Gardner scored 18 points for Lakeland and Brianna Jones added nine points plus a career-high 14 rebounds.

Sixth to 50: Kirsten Sauerbrei hit her 50th three-pointer of the season against Rockford on Saturday, and with it became just the sixth player in Muskies program history to make at least 50 triples in a season. She has a chance to keep moving up the list for most threes in a season, too. Next up is Aubri Rote, who hit 52 threes in 2003-04, while Bailey Grayvold's 55 three-pointers in 2016-17 are the fourth-most all-time in a season and Kristi (Thill) Bachar is third with 58 threes in 2005-06. Lakeland's all-time single-season record for threes is held by Peggy Keiper, who drained 76 three-pointers in 2007-08.

Home game still in reach: Lakeland comes into the night eighth in the NACC standings, one-half game ahead of MSOE (5-7) and also tied in the loss column with seventh-place Rockford (7-7). The Muskies have four games remaining, including tonight at home plus against Concordia Chicago at home next Tuesday, as well as a road trip to Aurora and Benedictine this Friday and Saturday.
