Box Score CHICAGO –
Kassidee Webb (
Fr.-Castroville, Texas) won twice, including a three-set win in singles play that helped propel the Lakeland University women's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Illinois Institute of Technology Thursday afternoon.
The Muskies earned their first-ever win over the Scarlet Hawks in six meetings and defeated one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's best teams a year ago. Lakeland improved to 3-2 overall and is now 2-1 in conference play with the win in a match rescheduled after being postponed due to rain Sept. 18.
Illinois Tech swept Lakeland 9-0 last year in dominant fashion, winning all but four games played over nine matches. The Muskies showed their improved depth this time, though, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and posting all three of their singles wins in the third through sixth flights.
Webb was part of a win at No. 2 doubles with
Olivia Heling (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) as the duo blanked Ashley Dame and Smrithi Shreedhar 8-0. Webb then traded set wins with Dame at No. 3 singles before pulling out the third set for a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory in the only singles match to go three sets.
Lakeland also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as
Morgan Erbstoesser (
Sr.-Union, Ill.) and
Baylee Babcock (
Jr.-Mauston, Wis.) edged Angelica Conwell and Akeyla Harper 8-5.
Sadie Conway (
Jr.-Monroe, Wis.) also won at No. 5 singles, taking the first set in a tiebreaker and going on to defeat Shreedhar in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Clare Kelnhofer (
So.-Brandon, Wis.) also pulled out a hard-fought win at No. 6 singles, holding off Harper 6-4, 7-5.
The Muskies next have a home doubleheader on Saturday, including a meeting with NACC frontrunner Concordia University Wisconsin and a dual against St. Norbert College at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at Plymouth High School.
