Series history:Â The Muskies and Sabres are longtime rivals whose history goes back to Lakeland's early years playing the sport in the 1970s and who have played each other regularly since the days of the Lake Michigan Conference. Complete records are unavailable, but in contests in both schools' current records Lakeland holds a 69-16 advantage in 85 meetings. The Muskies have beaten Marian four straight times, including most recently a 65-55 win earlier this season back on Dec. 9, 2023 in Fond du Lac. Lakeland also swept both games from the Sabres last season, including a convincing 76-51 win at home Jan. 25, 2023 and then a 77-75 victory on the road two weeks later. Marian's last win over Lakeland came Jan. 25, 2022, with a 66-62 win at home that was their first win over the Muskies since 2014 and snapped a 13-game losing streak in the series. Lakeland has dominated the series over a long stretch, winning 57 of the last 62 versus the Sabres.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Illinois Tech 76-57 Wednesday
The Muskies won for the second time in three days and again put up plenty of points, scoring 76 points on the back of 79 points at Alverno on Monday. Lakeland shot a season-best 53.4% against IIT and had five players score in double figures led by
Alexis Johnson, who made all eight of her field goal attempts for 16 points.
A.T. Bartlett and Kerstein Sauerbrei (13 points each) and
Lauryn Johnson and
Jenna Shea (10 points apiece) also all reached double figures and
Meghan MacPhee added six rebounds off the bench. The Muskies led almost from the tip, scoring their first points four seconds into the game and never trailing,
Sauerbrei made one three-pointer, the 150th of her career, making her the second player in program history to hit at least 150 threes. With five regular season games left she is seven triples from tying the school career record of 157 threes set by Kristi (Thill) Bachar from 2001-06.
Marian last time out: Lost to St. Norbert 88-43 WednesdayThe Sabres fell hard at home to the Green Knights, who shot 52.9% over the first three quarters, hit 14 three-pointers for the game and rolled up 53 points in the first half on the way to a 31-point halftime lead. Marian shot 34%, was outrebounded 45-26 and committed 21 turnovers in the loss. Kiara Williams was the lone Sabre in double figures with 10 points with Lyla Bartol adding nine points and two blocked shots.
The loss was the third straight for Marian in what has been an up and down run in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Prior to losing three straight, the Sabres won four of six against league foes, including a win over Concordia Wisconsin and close losses to Edgewood and Aurora. Marian has shot 33.3% and 34% over its last two games, though, and also was outrebounded by a combined minus-36 margin in them.
Recapping the first meeting: The Muskies jumped on the Sabres early in their meeting down Highway 23 in Fond du Lac back in December, scoring 25 points in the first quarter. Lakeland led by seven after one quarter, then outscored Marian 17-4 in the second quarter for a 42-22 halftime lead. The Sabres cut into the margin in the second half but got no closer than 10 points.
Kerstin Sauerbrei and
Dani Damrow scored 12 points each, including Sauerbrei making four three-pointers. Chelsea King led Marian with 26 points, but the rest of her team combined for 29 points and Marian as a team shot 32.8% for the game.
Alexis on a tear: Lakeland's
Alexis Johnson is on an impressive hot streak going back to the Muskies' game against Benedictine last week. The sophomore guard has made 17 of her last 19 field goal attempts, or 89.5% of her shots since the second half against Benedictine. A 5-foot-5 guard, Johnson has been an expert at finishing shots near the hoop in that time, as all 17 of her baskets have been in the paint area.
