Mary Blossom (
So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and
Kassidee Webb (
So.-Castroville, Texas) led a group of five double winners for the Lakeland University women's tennis team in an 8-1 dual win over Lawrence University Thursday night.
The Muskies moved to 7-5 overall on the season and 1-1 this spring after their second non-conference tune-up before the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. Lakeland as the No. 6 seed will face third-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College in the tourney's first round Monday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Hart Park in Wauwatosa.
Blossom paired up with
Baylee Babcock (
Sr.-Mauston, Wis.) for a convincing 8-1 win over Maddie Bublik and Tess McGlenn at No. 2 doubles to get the Muskies started, and then scored a hard-earned three set win at No. 2 singles. Blossom lost the first set but came back to edge Logan Kane 3-6, 6-2 and 10-8 in the tiebreaking third set.
Webb and
Olivia Heling (
So.-West Bend, Wis.) posted a close 8-6 win over Kane and Chloe Lamb at No. 1 doubles. Webb then defeated McGlenn 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, moving to 7-5 in singles matches this season.
Babcock also posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bublik at No. 4 singles, and both
Sydnee Conway (
Fr.-Monroe, Wis.) and
Clare Kelnhofer (
Sr.-Brandon, Wis.) were double winners as well. Conway topped Fanta Jatta 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Kelnhofer won her No. 6 singles match when Madi Mishica retired leading 6-1, 4-4 in the second set. Conway and Kelnhofer also defeated Jatta and Mishica 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Lakeland defeated Lawrence (2-9 overall) for the second time this season. The teams also met in the fall in both teams' season opener, with the Muskies winning 6-3 in Appleton.
