MASON CITY, Iowa – A quartet of Lakeland University grapplers finished third in their respective weight classes as the Muskies men's wrestling team competed at the Battle for the Helmet hosted by North Iowa Area Community College Saturday.
Jesse Burg (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.),
Dillon Raab (
So.-Spalding, Mich.),
Evan Haferkorn (
So.-Norway, Mich.) and
Diego Morales (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) all came in third and combined for 11 wins among them to lead Lakeland. The Muskies finished with 96 points as a team to place fifth of nine teams in the event.
Burg finished 2-1 at 149 pounds, including a pin of Trevor Reinke of Southeast (Neb.) C.C. in the quarterfinals. He then bounced back from a semifinal loss to pin Cordell White of host school NIACC in 6 minutes, 6 seconds.
Raab posted a 3-1 record at 157 lbs., winning twice to move into the semifinals. He then came back for a 14-5 major decision win over teammate
Will Ohman (
Fr.-Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) in the third-place match.
Haferkorn also won twice at 165 lbs. to get to a semifinal before losing by major decision. He also rebounded for a pin of Talan Weber of NIACC in 6:48 to capture the third-place match.
Morales made it four bronze showings for the Muskies with a 3-1 record at 285 lbs. He won his first two matches with pins to advance to the semifinals, where he dropped a major decision to Joshua Vis of Hawkeye (Iowa) C.C. Morales then won the third-place match over Miguel Perez Diaz of Southeast C.C. by medical forfeit.
Farouk Shaaban (
Jr.-Barrington, Ill.) also added three wins at 285 lbs., coming in seventh in the class. Shaaban bounced back from a loss in his first match to win twice, then after a second loss defeated Kamond Manning by fall in the seventh-place match.
The Muskies are back in action for a dual against the University of Chicago next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Chicago.
