Series history:Â 33rd meeting, Lakeland leads 26-6
The series between the Muskies and Stars has belonged to Lakeland, including last year's 83-63 victory a year ago this weekend in River Forest, Ill. Lakeland never trailed in the game, led by as much as 33 at one point and received career highs from
Jenna Shea (16 points) and
Meghan MacPhee (14) while
Kerstin Sauerbrei broke the school's career record for three-pointers made. The last Dominican win came Jan. 18, 2020, with a 78-50 victory at Lakeland. That win snapped the Muskies' 11-game winning streak in the series from 2013-19. The schools first met Nov. 23, 1983, with Lakeland rolling to a 70-34 win at Dominican.Â
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Concordia Wisconsin 63-60 Wednesday
The Muskies faced their rivals from Mequon in a game that went down the final seconds. Lakeland cut an 11-point deficit to three in the final quarter but missed a number of chances to get closer in the final minute as well as a tying three-point attempt at the buzzer. The Muskies scored 21 points in the first quarter but sputtered after and shot 29.7% from the field to the Falcons' 39.1% shooting.
Jenna Caterino led the team with 12 points and six rebounds, but Lakeland lost for only the second time this season at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.Â
Dominican last time out: Lost to Wisconsin Lutheran 78-35 Wednesday
The Stars hosted the Warriors at home, but the guests started the game on a 14-3 run and went into halftime leading 43-15. Wisconsin Lutheran held the Stars to 22.2% shooting and also outrebounded Dominican 52-29. Melissa Gomez led the Stars with 10 points and six rebounds, while Danielle Washington and Chenoa Moss both added six points each. Dominican dropped its seventh straight game and, unlike Lakeland, has largely struggled at home with a 2-9 record.
About the Stars: Dominican holds a 5-15 overall record and is 1-10 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The Stars are in their first season under coach Tethnie Carrillo, who was an assistant with the Stars last year and previously spent 16 seasons as head coach at Elmhurst University. The Stars are lead by senior Melissa Gomez, who averages 10.7 points per game. Though they've struggled in the NACC, Dominican has already made strides in its overall record after finished 1-24 last year.
Senior Day: Lakeland is playing its second-to-last home game this season but is honoring the seniors before Saturday's game.
Meryam Belbaz,
Halle Boldt,
Jenna Caterino and
Gabbi Glatczak will be recognized before the game, four players with varying levels of experience in the program. Caterino is the lone four-year member of the team and is a three-year starter, while Glatczak has been part of the team for three years but has had a career plagued by injuries and also is set to graduate from Lakeland in three years this spring. Belbaz transferred to the Muskies from Oakton Community College in Illinois and is in her second year in the program, while Sheboygan native Boldt returned home after three years at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, where she was a member of an NAIA national championship team.
