Jesse Burg (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and
Fulton Stroud (
Fr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) both won twice to stay alive in their weight classes as the Lakeland University men's wrestling team finished the first day of the NCAA Division III Region VII Regional hosted by Augsburg University.
Burg and Stroud both posted 2-1 records on Friday and will wrestle on Saturday, the first Muskies to advance to the second day of regionals since 2017. Lakeland scored 24 points as a team and ranks 12th of 16 teams competing after the first day of the regional championships.
Burg opened with a win at 149 pounds with a pin of Frank Budederi of Concordia University Wisconsin in 3 minutes, 41 seconds. He dropped a major decision in the quarterfinals but posted another pin of Leonardo Ruggiero of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 5:38 in the consolation round.
Stroud opened with a pin of Cole Smith of UW-Platteville in 2:18 at 174 lbs. before a loss in the quarterfinals. He came back with a second pin, taking down Ethan Ensrud of Linfield (Ore.) University in 3:51.
Four more Muskies posted one win on Friday before being eliminated, including
Dillon Raab (
So.-Spalding, Mich.) and
Diego Morales (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) both winning their opening matches at 157 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.
Lucas Schanen (
Sr.-Muskego, Wis.) and
Evan Haferkorn (
So.-Norway, Mich.) also rebounded from opening losses to win their second matches before losing a second time.
