Tucker Gegenfurtner (
So.-Onalaska, Wis.) hit a grand slam as part of a six-RBI performance and the Lakeland University baseball team threatened a school scoring record in a 27-5 rout of Alfred (N.Y.) University Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational.
The Muskies posted their largest scoring output in nearly 27 years and the second-most runs in a game in school history. Lakeland came close to the school record set in a 29-6 win at Maranatha Baptist University April 14, 1998, and improved to 5-5 overall this season, and 5-3 on its spring trip.
Gegenfurtner and
Sean Gregorius (
Fr.-Germantown, Wis.) both hit home runs, including Gegenfurtner hitting a grand slam that was part of a 14-run fifth inning. Gregorius also added a three-run homer in the third inning as the Muskies scored three each in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-1 lead going into the massive fifth inning.
Gegenfurtner also added a two-run triple in the fourth, and the Muskies scored their 14 runs with the help of nine hits, three errors and five walks in the fifth.
Dylan Costello (
Jr.-New Berlin, Wis.) opened the inning with a double and later walked.
Bryce Backus (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) singled twice and
Nick Chiu (
Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) added a two-run single as Lakeland sent 19 batters to the plate in the inning.
Backus and
Caleb Sumsion (
Jr.-Dayton, Nev.) both led the Muskies with three hits each, with Gegenfurtner, Gregorius,
James Alvarez (
Jr.-Barstow, Calif.),
Zak Keegan (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.),
Logan South (
Fr.-Oswego, Ill.) and
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah) added two hits each. A total of 14 different players finished with at least one hit and Lakeland piled up 24 hits.
Mason Holz (
Fr.-Waupun, Wis.) started and pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one run with eight strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win.
Charles Schaefer (
Fr.-Sag Harbor, N.Y.) came on in the fifth and allowed four hits and four runs (two earned) with three strikeouts.
Eight different players finished with one hit each for Alfred, a program in its second year of play that dropped to 0-6 this season.
The Muskies wrap up their spring break trip on Friday with two games, first facing Suffolk (Mass.) University at 8:15 a.m. Central time, 9:15 a.m. locally in Florida, and then following with a game against Albertus Magnus (Conn.) College at 11:45 a.m. Central/12:45 p.m. Eastern.
