PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Lucas Oswald hit a one-out double in the top of the 11th inning to drive in the go-ahead run and Wisconsin Lutheran College closed out a sweep of the Lakeland University baseball team with a 10-8 win in th second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors also posted a 14-2 win in the first game in taking both games of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The Muskies finished the day with their fifth straight loss and dropped to 10-17 overall and 4-8 in the NACC.
The back-and-forth second game included the teams swapping the lead four times, and Lakeland tied the game with a run in the eighth when
Logan South (
Fr.-Oswego, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to lead off and later scored on a two-out double by
Tucker Gegenfurtner (
So.-Onalaska, Wis.). Both teams had chances to tie in the ninth, with WLC (12-11 overall, 7-3 NACC) putting runners at second and third with two outs and the Muskies also getting
Caleb Sumsion (
Jr.-Dayton, Nev.) to third before a fly out to end the inning.
Lakeland also had a chance in the 10th inning when
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah) and
Zak Keegan (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) both walked with one out and Spens moved to third after a fielder's choice. A groundout back to the pitcher ended the inning, though, and the Warriors broke through in the 11th with three doubles in the inning. Ian Rintelman led off with a double against

Rily Roberts (
Fr.-Chattanooga, Tenn.) then came on to pitch and Oswald hit a double to right center with one out to score Rintelman. Lutheran then added an insurance run when Jacob Lorbecki hit a double to left to score Oswald and make it 10-8, and the Muskies went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th.
The Muskies twice rallied from deficits in the game, first when Spens hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give Lakeland a 4-2 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran came back with three in the sixth, but the Muskies answered against as South singled up the middle to score
Charlie Spahn (
Jr.-Greenfield, Wis.) and Keegan singled two batters later to score South and
Chris Day (
Jr.-Victorville, Calif.).
Mason Holz (
Fr.-Waupun, Wis.) started and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned) with five strikeouts. Watkins came on in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs with two strikeouts before Roberts finished the final inning.
The first game started quietly as
Bryce Backus (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) set down the Warriors in order in the first inning and got through two hits in the second with the help of a 6-4-3 double play. WLC broke the game open over the next two innings, though, scoring four times in the third and five more in the fourth, including two-run doubles by Aiden Montgomery and Nolan Hodgins.
The Warriors would score in every inning the rest of the way, while the Muskies could generate just six hits in the seven-inning game.
Dylan Costello (
Jr.-New Berlin, Wis.) provided a highlight with his first collegiate home run in the fifth, and South scored in the seventh when Gegenfurtner reached on an error.
