The Lakeland College women's basketball team will play its 2014-15 home opener tonight when it welcomes the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a 7 p.m. contest at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies have had a have had a 10-day break since losing their season opener 61-48 at Calvin (Mich.) on Nov. 15. Lakeland hung tough against the Knights, leading at halftime and trailing by just five with less than four minutes to play before Calvin finished the game on a 10-2 run. Freshman
C.J. Usadel came off the bench to lead the Muskies with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals, while fellow freshman
Rachel Stankevich added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
UW-Stevens Point has played four times so far and enters tonight with a 2-2 record. Most recently, UWSP hosted Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday and lost 70-59. The Pointers led by 12 late in the first half but IWU went on a 46-9 run, leading by as many as 25. Stevens Point hammered the Titans on the glass (39-23 advantage) but committed 26 turnovers, while Illinois Wesleyan shot 50.9% from the field.
This is the fifth meeting ever between the Muskies and Pointers and the first since 1998, and the series is tied 2-2. Lakeland won the last meeting, defeating the Pointers on the road 61-53 on Nov. 21, 1998 in the championship game of the UWSP Terry Porter Classic.
