Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Chicago guard Jaela DeJean scored 32 points and the Lakeland College women's basketball team never recovered from an early deficit in an 85-66 loss Saturday afternoon at the Concordia's Gieseman Gymnasium.
The Muskies dropped their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener and fell to 0-3 overall, committing 28 turnovers and shooting just 31.3% (20 of 64). That wasn't nearly enough against the much-improved Cougars, who improved to 3-1 and have already won more games than last year's squad, which finished 2-23 overall.
McLean, a 5-foot-5 freshman guard, hit 12 of 20 shots and added five rebounds and four assists. The Cougars as a team shot 29 of 72 (40.3%) and hit 10 three-pointers, leading by as many as 29 points at 82-53 with 5:34 left before the Muskies finished the game on a 13-3 run.
Lakeland fell behind 8-0 to start the game and never got closer than five the rest of the way. Concordia built the lead to double digits just 5:35 in when DeJean scored in the paint for a 17-7 lead, and maintained and built on that lead much of the rest of the way.
The Muskies briefly got within six after
C.J. Usadel (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) hit a three-pointer to make it 22-16 midway through the first half, but the Cougars soon went on a 12-0 lead for a 36-17 lead. Concordia led 45-31 at halftime and never led by less than 13 the rest of the way.
Trista Barron (
Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) came off the bench to score 12 points for the Muskies, hitting three three-pointers. Usadel and
Kayla Clark (
So.-West Bend, Wis.) both added 11 points each.
Usadel and
Rachel Stankevich (
Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) both added nine rebounds as Lakeland outrebounded Concordia 51-48.
Gaby Cappaert (
Jr.-Stephenson, Mich.) also added eight points and five steals off the bench.
The Muskies next will host Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
