KOHLER – A trio of close doubles match losses were the difference as the Lakeland University women's tennis team lost a dual match with Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday night at Sports Core.
The Scarlet Hawks defeated the Muskies 7-2 in the non-conference match that was closer than the final team tally indicates. Lakeland was competitive in all three doubles matches as well as several singles losses but dropped to 2-8 overall this season.
The Muskies did win twice in singles against a good IIT (5-2 overall) team.
Calley Wesemann (
Fr.-Watertown, Wis.) continued her excellent freshman season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Paulina Kulyastev at No. 5 singles, and
Abby Juozapaitis (
Fr.-North Prairie, Wis.) also picked up her second singles win of the season, routing Manon Tesche 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
All three doubles matches were very close to swinging in the Muskies' favor. Wesemann and
Ellie Roe (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) pushed Morgan Colbert and Sophia Nelson to the limit at No. 1 doubles before falling 8-6, while Juozapaitis and
Emma Schad (
Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) also lost to Kulyastev and Allison Trang by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
Carly Brault (
Sr.-Brillion, Wis.) and
Rachel Conery (
Sr.-Vulcan, Mich.) also were defeated by Shailee Shah and Jennifer Young 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Lakeland also had another close miss in No. 2 singles, where
Ann Schroeder (
Jr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Nelson. Brault also was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Trang in No. 4 singles.
The Muskies have a 10-day break before their next matches when they travel to face Dominican (Ill.) University and Aurora (Ill.) University next Saturday, Sept. 30.
