PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jesse Burg (
Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) took top honors in his weight class as the Lakeland University men's wrestling team competed at the 8-Man Battles hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday.
Berg finished with a 3-0 record to place first in the 157-pound Gold division, including edging Briar Ivey of UW-Eau Claire 2-1 in the semifinals and then topping Kris Castro of St. John's (Minn.) University by a 7-1 decision in the final. He led the Muskies to a team score of 83 points to finish fifth of seven teams competing at the event.
Berg was one of four top-3 finishes for Lakeland in the Gold classes, including freshman
Breyson Kelley (
Florence, Wis.) coming home second at 184 lbs. Kelley finished 2-1 with a pair of technical fall wins before losing to Ryder Depies of UW-Eau Claire in the first place match.
Jacob Hillshafer (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) and
Evan Haferkorn (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) both placed third in their class, including Hillshafer at 141 lbs. and Haferkorn at 165 lbs. Haferkorn took the third-place match with a pin of Trev Halsey of Nebraska Wesleyan University in 6:41.
Lakeland also added two wrestlers posting the top records in their weights in the Flights portion of wrestling, including
Caleb Hillshafer (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) going 3-0 at 125 lbs.
Farouk Shaaban (
Sr.-Barrington, Ill.) also was first at 285 lbs. with three straight wins, including defeating teammate
Nidal Farah (
Sr.-Ventura, Calif.) by fall in 5:00 in his final match of the day.
The Muskies next are at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invite on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9 a.m. in Milwaukee.
