MEQUON, Wis. –
Tucker Gegenfurtner (
So.-Onalaska, Wis.) drove in four runs and the top four in the order all had big games as the Lakeland University baseball team defeated Concordia University Wisconsin 10-7 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Kapco Park.
The Muskies earned their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season in the opening game of a doubleheader. Concordia came back for a 17-1 win in seven innings in the second game to salvage a split of the twinbill.
The Muskies (7-10 overall, 1-3 NACC) scored all 10 of their runs from the fifth inning on in the opener, including four-run frames in both the fifth and eighth innings plus two more in the sixth.
Lakeland's first four in the batting order of
Logan South (
Fr.-Oswego, Ill.),
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah),
Zak Keegan (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) and Gegenfurtner combined for ten of the Muskies' 14 hits, all ten runs driven in and seven runs scored. Gegenfurtner and Spens both went 3-for-4 while Keegan and South added two hits each, with Keegan driving in three runs and South adding two RBIs.
Lakeland took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, and took a seven-run lead after scoring four more in the eighth.
Caleb Sumsion (
Jr.-Dayton, Nev.) continued a three-hit day of his own by leading off the eighth with a single, and South doubled down the left field line to drive him in. Keegan later hit an RBI single and Gegenfurtner added a two-run double to make it 10-3.
Concordia (10-7 overall, 2-2 NACC) scored four times in the bottom of the eighth, but
Rily Roberts (
Fr.-Chattanooga, Tenn.) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close it out.
Bryce Backus (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) picked up the win in the start, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 this season.
The Falcons dominated the second game, scoring 13 runs over the second and third innings. Lakeland briefly tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second when Sumsion singled with two outs to score
Sean Gregorius (
Fr.-Germantown, Wis.), but CUW scored seven times in the bottom of the second to take an 8-1 lead and chase starter
Adrian Mercier (
Fr.-Powers, Mich.) from the game after 1 1/3 innings.
Concordia finished with 16 hits in the second game. Keegan posted two hits to lead Lakeland, which registered just six hits against Falcons pitcher Jack Hribernik, who struck out five to earn the win.
