Keegan extends hitting streak but Muskies lose twice to Eagles

MADISON, Wis. – Zak Keegan (Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) stayed hot with five more hits in extending his hit streak to 12 games but the Lakeland University baseball team was defeated by Edgewood College twice Wednesday in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Eagles won the first game 11-0 and the second 10-4 to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Muskies fell to 10-25 overall and 4-16 in the NACC with four games remaining in the season.

Keegan went 2-for-3 in the first game, providing two of Lakeland's three hits in an otherwise ugly game, and then went 3-for-5 in the nightcap. The senior third baseman raised his average to .403, and his 56 hits this season are a new career high and tied with three others for the sixth-most in a season in program history.

The Muskies outhit Edgewood 14-11 in the second game but were unable to put together a big inning to get closer after the Eagles (16-16 overall, 10-8 NACC) built an early lead. Lakeland scored in four different innings but hit into a pair of double plays and stranded at least one runner in seven of nine innings.

Nick Chiu (Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.), Tucker Gegenfurtner (So.-Onalaska, Wis.), Landen Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) and OakLee Spens (Sr.-South Weber, Utah) all added two hits in the second game, and Chiu, Spens and Chris Day (Jr.-Victorville, Calif.) all singled to drive in a run.

Drew Lenz scattered 10 hits over five innings to earn the win for Edgewood. Bryce Backus (Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) took the loss, allowing four hits and five runs with four walks in three innings.

The Eagles dominated the first game starting with a six-run second inning. Edgewood added two in the fourth and three in the fifth on the way to winning in seven innings on account of the 10-run rule.

Mason Holz (Fr.-Waupun, Wis.) took the loss, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) over four innings. Sutton Shurley (Jr.-Fort Worth, Texas) and Charles Schaefer (Fr.-Sag Harbor, N.Y.) closed it out with one scoreless inning each.

Lakeland next will host Marian University for its final home games of the season next Tuesday. The Senior Day doubleheader will begin at noon.
