David Benton was a leader of some of Lakeland’s greatest football teams. During his senior season in 2005, Benton was a second-team Football Gazette All-American, honorable mention D3Football.com All-American and first-team all-North Region defense selection, and Illini-Badger Football Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year. A two-time first-team all-IBFC honoree, Benton was among the nation’s leaders in sacks and tackles-for-loss per game and led the 2004 and 2005 Muskies to IBFC titles and a berth in the 2005 NCAA Division III playoffs.
